How to use this startup name generator

A startup's first name often isn't its last: Google started as Backrub and Instagram as Burbn. But the name still has to get you through incorporation, a pitch deck, your first hires and a launch, so it's worth more than an afternoon.

This generator leans toward broad, brandable names that can survive a pivot. Use keywords about your mission or market rather than your current feature set, favourite the names you like, and export the list to vote on with your co-founders.

Tips for choosing the right name

Separate company and product names

Your legal entity can be different from your product brand. Many startups incorporate under a neutral holding name and keep the product name flexible.

Plan for the pivot

Most startups change direction at least once. A name tied to one feature ("PhotoShareHub") becomes a problem when you move into video or B2B.

Check the company registry

Search Companies House, your state's business registry or your local equivalent before you incorporate. Similar registered names can block the filing.

Run the pitch test

Introduce the company out loud: "Hi, I'm the founder of …". If you hesitate or have to spell it, investors and journalists will too.

Startup names built to grow

  • Slackchosen after a pivot from gaming, broad enough for any team
  • Stripepicked over "/dev/payments" for being short and broad
  • Notionabstract enough to cover docs, wikis and databases
  • Airbnbshortened from AirBed & Breakfast as it grew

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my startup name later?
Yes. Rebrands are common in the first year or two. It gets more expensive once you have customers, press coverage and registered trademarks, so settle it before a big launch if you can.
Does my startup need the .com domain?
Not on day one. Many funded startups launched on .io, .co or a prefixed .com and bought the exact match later. Make sure the domain you use looks trustworthy and is easy to spell.
Should the company name match the product name?
It's simplest when they match, but not required. If you expect to launch several products, a broader company name gives you room to grow.
